The 2016 RSEC Academy summer programs for students ages 9 to 21 include courses in math, reading and social skills,. It also includes a Classroom Without Walls, and a career exploration session that builds academic and social skills during their summer breaks. The customized programs and experiences are offered 8:15 am to 2:30 pm Monday through Thursday, beginning Monday, July 11 and ending Wednesday, August 3. The RSEC Academy is one of the alternative programs of the Regional Services Education Center (RSEC), a nonprofit organization that provides school districts in Southern New Hampshire high quality educational and special needs-focused programs and services.

“Our annual RSEC Academy summer programs allow students to remain engaged in learning throughout the summer and apply academic and social skills to learning experiences outside the classroom,” said Judy Koch, RSEC’s executive director. “We strive to create a balance between tutorial, small group instruction, and experiential outdoor education.”

For students interested in enhancing academic skills, courses are available in reading, writing, math, or individualized subjects and building social skills. They involve direct instruction and a combination of games, experiential learning opportunities and lots of fun. The Academy can also individually tailor programs in a variety of subjects for students who need to recover academic credits or want to build their skills in a specific area.

The summer program also features a career exploration and job search program where students learn about career paths and post-high school options. Enhanced by the online interactive Career Cruising software, students identify career interests and can connect with business owners.  They can even tour local organizations to learn more about jobs that interest them. Students also receive resources for writing letters and resumes, completing job applications and business etiquette.

All courses are complemented by RSEC’s Classroom Without Walls. This program encourages hands-on instruction that builds problem solving, interpretation, comprehension, verbal communications and cooperative learning skills. Students embark on “learning expeditions” and adventure experiences that have included overnight canoe trips at local state parks, day trips to museums, local sporting events, hiking, environmental projects, video production projects, theatre productions and community service.

“Our approach is a unique one, and really offers something for everyone,” Koch said. “Our goal is to raise the capability of parents and schools to help all students be successful, and that doesn’t pause during summer break.”
