Position Overview:
The School Counselor will be responsible for providing comprehensive counseling services to students, focusing on their academic, emotional, and social development. The counselor will work collaboratively with educators, administrators, and families to create a supportive environment that fosters positive student outcomes. This position is integral to the development of students with disabilities, ensuring their needs are met both within the school setting and in the broader community.
Key Responsibilities:
Individual and Group Counseling: Provide individual and group counseling sessions to students to address social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.
Crisis Intervention: Respond to and manage crises, including emotional distress or behavioral issues, and provide appropriate intervention and support.
Academic Support: Collaborate with educators to provide guidance and strategies to help students succeed academically, particularly those facing challenges due to their disabilities.
Behavioral Support: Develop and implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) in coordination with teachers, special education staff, and families.
Consultation: Work closely with families, teachers, and other school staff to support students' emotional and psychological well-being and to address any barriers to academic success.
Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Participate in IEP meetings to provide input on students’ mental health, emotional needs, and goals, and help develop plans that align with students’ strengths and challenges.
Parent and Family Engagement: Support and educate families on strategies to assist their children’s emotional and academic development.
Referral Services: Refer students to outside agencies or professionals as needed for additional psychological, medical, or social services.
Professional Development: Continuously develop professionally by attending training, conferences, and workshops related to counseling and supporting students with disabilities.
Summer Program Support: Participate in and support the summer programs as part of the 220-day work schedule, continuing to provide counseling services and support for students during this time.
Qualifications:
Education: Master’s degree in School Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
Licensure: Current state certification or licensure as a School Counselor, LCSW, or LMHC in New Hampshire (or eligible for certification).
Experience: At least 2 years of experience working with students, particularly those with disabilities or in specialized education settings. Experience in providing counseling services and behavioral interventions is preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
Strong knowledge of educational disabilities and the challenges these students face.
Ability to develop and implement individualized counseling strategies.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work with students, families, and staff.
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Compassionate and empathetic approach to working with students with diverse needs.
